Vietnam is one of the best-value destinations in the region and more diverse than most first-timers expect. The country is long, so route choice matters.

When to go

Weather varies by region. Broadly, February to April and August to October are good nationwide. The north (Hanoi, Halong) is cool and misty in winter; the centre (Da Nang, Hoi An) is driest March to August; the south (Saigon) is dry roughly December to April.

Choosing a route

• North only, 4N/5D: Hanoi Old Quarter, a full-day Halong Bay cruise, Ninh Binh (Tam Coc, Hoa Lu).
• North + centre, 5N/6D: add Da Nang for Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, with Hoi An close by.
• Three regions, 8N/9D: Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City with the Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta.
• South only, 4N/5D: Saigon, Cu Chi, Mekong Delta, Vung Tau.

Money and budget

Visa and entry

Vietnam offers an e-visa to Indian travellers, applied for online before departure. Print the approval and carry it. Check the current validity and single/multiple-entry options for your plan.

Practical notes

• Domestic flights (Hanoi–Da Nang–Saigon) are short and cheap and save a lot of time.
• Cross roads at a steady pace — traffic flows around you.
• Carry small notes; breaking large ones is a hassle.
